Bruce Handler, MD
Title: Vice-President of MH Consultants
Bruce Handler, MD has practiced and taught medicine for the past 31 years. He practiced emergency medicine and cardiology in the Midwest and served as faculty for the University of Wisconsin and University of Illinois, College of Medicine and Dartmouth Medical School. He created cardiac electrophysiology services for large multispecialty clinics where he practiced and chaired the continuing medical education committee as well as participating on medical and pacemaker review boards in Wisconsin and Illinois.
For the past 4 years he has been involved in the creation, teaching and evaluation of the Chicago Police Department Crisis Intervention Team training program. Bringing ideas for adult education and acting as lecturer for geriatric issues, co-occurring disorders, psychotropic medications and developmental disabilities, he has assisted in evaluation of role playing crisis interventions as well. As a certified instructor, he constantly tweaks the course content and looks for ways to improve and expand the basic CIT course.
Bruce has deep interest and commitment to advocate for those with developmental disability and serious mental illness. He is a family member, himself, with concern for loved ones and others who might be in crisis and have an encounter with law enforcement. He volunteers for National Alliance for Mental Illness of greater Chicago as a teacher for their family to family and parent and teachers as allies programs. He is chairman of the steering committee of the Medical Reserve Corps of Chicago under the Board of Health. His wife, Nora advocates as well and has participated in national programs evaluating funding for programs and services for the disabled. She has formed Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters, a non-profit support group for siblings with disabilities.
As vice-president of the newly established corporation, MH Consultants, he is dedicated to educating law enforcement and other individuals on safe interventions for individuals in crisis when law enforcement is summoned. The company is focused on providing and tailoring programs for local organizations and jurisdictions to meet their needs. We offer the experience and knowledge gained from training over 600 officers to date.
